That's right, Valentine's Day. Hallmark's Black Friday. A waste of time.
Sorry if I'm not romantic enough, but seriously, what more is it? One day where all of the men of the world go and buy frivolous items to swoon over the girls who think love is all about who gets the best or most expensive item. Stupid. I don't want anything for V-Day because I think that a guy should profess his love everyday (okay, not EVERY day, but be original and do it on a day that isn't expected by the general population of the world).
Maybe I'm being cynical. But I'm not monetarily contributing to this holiday, because I think it's overrated.
I see your point there! I agree that people shouldn't have a reason for romantic gestures. It is rather silly to have one set day where you are SUPPOSED to get your significant other something. I find that I feel better about doing something for someone when its simply for the sake of doing it.
ReplyDeleteI do however like valentines day as a celebration of love and the important role your love interest plays in your life. Take away the commercialism and I think it is a celebration worth noting.
I disagree. Valentines day isn't about buying stuff anymore than Christmas, Easter, fourth of July or Halloween is about buying stuff.
ReplyDeleteIs there stuff to buy for those holidays? Sure! We're capitalists (for now). It's what we do. We sell crap and other capitalists buy it! I bought my wife something for valentines day. But I buy her stuff all the friggen time! Doesn't even matter what day it is! Don't want to buy your boyfriend a heart shaped pillow? Fine! Don't! Buy him some truck tires. He'll get some use out of those and he'll love'em!
Anyway.
To me, Valentines day is a holiday dedicated to the remembrance of one emotion. Love. Whether it be the love for our friends, our siblings or even our pets!
I think some people do roll it into a couples day and use it as an excuse to get pissy. (I'm pissy right now but I'm drunk and belligerent so just ignore the typ O's)
I'm guessing what your problem is, and I have the same problem with Christmas, is that on valentines day you feel obligated to buy something for someone. The obligation turns the act of gift giving into work and work, as we all know, sucks the fun right out of every thing!
